Simone Biles featured in Sportico's list of top 15 highest-paid female athletes of 2024 following another record-breaking season in gymnastics. She made it to the top 10 as well alongside tennis ace Coco Gauff and WNBA Rookie of The Year Caitlin Clark.
Gauff took the No.1 spot with a staggering $30.4 million from prize money and endorsements, becoming only the third woman in history to earn more than $30 million in a given year after Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. Clark, meanwhile, bagged the tenth spot on her debut appearance on the list, earning $11.1 million from a record-breaking season at Iowa and Indiana Fever.
Biles ranked ninth on the list with an impressive $11.13 million in earnings from prize money and endorsements in 2024. She earned $135,000 in prize money from a season where she won four medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, while the rest of her earnings came from brand endorsements and sponsorships, and the Gold Over America Tour, which she headlined for the second time.
Athleta, Eli Lilly, GK Elite, K18, MasterClass, Nulo, Powerade, Spieth America, and Visa are some of the gymnast's top contributors to endorsement earnings. Following the release of the Netflix docuseries 'Simone Biles: Rising', the 27-year-old's popularity boosted further with corporate speaking engagements.
American-born Chinese freestyle skier Eileen Gu bagged the second spot on the list with $22.1 million, while five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek placed third with $21.4 million.
Simone Biles finished as the most decorated American Olympic gymnast in potential final Olympics
Simone Biles had once claimed she thought she would retire after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. However, the American gymnast endured a tough campaign at the Games, withdrawing from several event finals due to twisties. She didn't practice gymnastics for nearly a year after that before making a comeback at the 2023 World Championships.
Biles got her Olympic redemption as well at the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning three gold medals and one silver medal to take her tally to eleven medals. She overtook Shawn Miller to become the most decorated American Olympic gymnast and with her combined tally of 41 Olympic and World medals, the 27-year-old is the most decorated in the history of the sport.
While the seven-time Olympic champion hasn't announced it was her final Olympics, she hasn't guaranteed a return at the 2028 LA Games either.
Biles is among one of the oldest gymnasts competing currently and has complained of a tiring body. While she is expected to compete at the 2025 World Championships, it may not be surprising if she announces her retirement before the 2028 Olympics.
